The M Check: A Simple Way to Keep Your Bike Safe

Before heading out on any ride, it’s always worth taking a minute or two to make sure your bike is safe and ready to go. That’s where the M Check comes in.

The M Check is a quick, systematic way to inspect your bike by following the shape of the letter “M” — moving from one end of the bike to the other. It helps you spot any loose parts, wear, or issues before they become a problem on the road.

What Is the M Check?

The M Check is a simple pre-ride safety check that works from front to back (or back to front), covering all the key parts of your bike.

In just a couple of minutes, you can make sure everything is:

  • Tight
  • Working properly
  • Safe to ride

It’s one of the easiest habits you can build to keep your bike running smoothly.

How to Do the M Check

Follow the “M” shape along your bike and check each section as you go:

1. Front Wheel & Brakes

Start at the front wheel:

  • Make sure the wheel is secure and spinning freely
  • Check that the quick release or axle nuts are tight
  • Squeeze the front brake — the pads should grip evenly and not rub the rim
2. Tyres
  • Give the tyre a squeeze — it should feel firm with very little give
  • Check the tread and condition
  • Inflate to the recommended pressure (written on the tyre sidewall)
3. Handlebars & Controls
  • Ensure handlebars are straight and secure
  • Check that brake levers, grips, bell, and lights are firmly in place
  • Make sure the brakes feel responsive
  • Look for fraying or rusting cables
4. Frame & Accessories
  • Check your bottle cage is tight and holding your bottle securely
  • If you carry a pump, make sure it’s properly clipped in
  • Give the bike a quick once-over for anything loose
5. Pedals & Crankset
  • Spin the pedals — they should move smoothly without wobble
  • Check there’s no play in the cranks or bottom bracket
  • If you hear clicking or cracking while riding, this is often where the issue is
6. Chain & Gears
  • Make sure the chain is clean and well lubricated
  • Check for smooth gear shifting
  • Look to see that the chain isn’t rubbing or slipping
  • Keep an eye out for slack or unusual movement
7. Saddle
  • Ensure the saddle is tight and secure
  • Check that it’s at a comfortable height — you shouldn’t be stretching too much or sitting too low
  • A loose saddle can quickly make a ride uncomfortable
8. Rear Wheel & Brakes

Finish at the rear wheel:

  • Check the wheel is tight and running straight (no wobble)
  • Test the rear brake — it should engage evenly
  • Make sure the tyre is properly inflated

Also:

  • Shift into your easiest gear (closest to the spokes) and make sure the chain doesn’t go too far
  • The derailleur should move cleanly without pushing the chain off the cassette
Keep It Clean & Running Smoothly

A clean bike is a happy bike. Regularly:

  • Wipe down your drivetrain
  • Apply lubricant where metal parts move against each other
  • Use proper bike cleaning products like degreasers and chain lube

If anything doesn’t seem right during your M Check:

  • Tighten it
  • Adjust it
  • Pump it

And if you’re unsure or don’t have the tools, bring it into your local bike shop — we’re always happy to help get you sorted.

Make It a Habit

The M Check only takes a couple of minutes, but it can make a huge difference to your safety and your bike’s performance.

Do it before every ride, and you’ll catch small issues before they turn into big ones.

Not sure you’re doing it right? No problem.
